Nel 2030, Ted Mosby, il protagonista, fa sedere i due figli sul divano di casa e inizia a raccontare loro come ha conosciuto la loro madre, di cui non rivela mai l'identità.
La serie dunque narra le sue vicende dal 2005 in poi, alla ricerca della donna giusta da sposare. Insieme a lui gli amici Marshall Eriksen e Lily Aldrin, una giovane coppia di fidanzati, e Barney Stinson, donnaiolo che cerca sempre di vivere nel divertimento più assoluto. Nel primo episodio Ted conosce Robin Scherbatsky, una giovane reporter con la quale instaura un rapporto speciale, la quale si unirà al gruppo.
